THE BUILDINGS /

New Magistrates Court

The New Magistrates Courthouse covers 14,000 sq m (150,700 sq ft) of which 2,000 sq m (21,528 sq ft) is a retail shell for Allied London Properties and 1,800 sq m (19,375 sq ft) is basement car parking for staff and magistrates. The courthouse sets new standards in design by providing efficient separation of the various courthouse users, principally through the clever use of a central glazed atrium which splits a dignified red sandstone courthouse from a glass and zinc-clad modern administration building.

The courthouse covers 4 main floors, where an administration floor covers 800 sq m (8,611 sq ft), and a courthouse floor covers 1,050 sq m (11,302 sq ft). The remaining areas are made up of a ground floor coroner’s court and a mezzanine level for the facilities management staff.

The entrance to the courthouse is off Spinningfields Square and lines through with the old processional route which starts at the Town Hall. Members of the public are immediately transported to the second floor main entrance area by means of 2 large escalators. Payment of fines or enquiries can take place without the need to pass through security clearance, and the concept is an attractive and readable building, easy to use by all parties.
